SportAccord Convention 2012 Awarded to Québec City

Québec City has been awarded the right to host the SportAccord Convention in 2012. This seven-day international event will bring together over 1,500 influential people from the world of sports.

"The efforts we have made to attract international sports events have begun to pay off," said Québec City mayor Régis Labeaume. "The SportAccord Convention represents a unique opportunity to demonstrate to influential sports people the many advantages our city has to offer."

After visiting the capital in early June, Executive Director Anna Hellman was impressed and recommended to her board that Québec City organize this world-class event. The board includes chair Hein Verbruggen, René Fasel, head of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and Sarah Lewis, secretary general of the International Ski Federation (FIS). The year 2012 also marks the 10th anniversary of the SportAccord Convention, headquartered in Lausanne, the Olympic capital.

The executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will also take this opportunity to hold one of its meetings. The General Association of International Sports Associations (GAISF), the Associations of International Olympic Summer and Winter Sports (AIOSF and AIOWF), the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) and the International World Games Association (IWGA) will also hold their annual meetings at that time. The presence of international sports decision-makers will be an opportunity to discover what makes Québec City such a wonderful place.

Hosting this event is a major step for any destination wanting to carve out a place on the international sports scene.

A Major Convention
The SportAccord Convention brings together all key international sports organizations, including the IOC, the international sports federations, cities and organizing committees. Also represented will be the suppliers of services for the planning and holding of major sports competitions, as well as the international media. The event will provide a unique opportunity for Québec sports people to spend time with influential international representatives.

In 2010, the event was held in Dubai. Next year, one year before the Summer Olympics, the prestigious event will take place in London. In Québec City, the Convention will be held May 20-26, 2012.  This convention will be key in promoting Québec City’s, Québec’s and Canada’s strategic position in hosting major internal sports events.
